Beacon Program Overview The Institute for Local Government’s (ILG) Beacon Program provides a framework for California’s cities, counties, and special districts to lead the way toward sustainable, resilient, and vibrant communities. Free and open to agencies at all stages of climate action, the program recognizes voluntary efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, conserve energy, and adopt forward-thinking policies that promote environmental stewardship.
Through technical assistance, training, and peer-to-peer networking, Beacon helps local governments track and share sustainability best practices while showcasing their achievements to a statewide audience. Participants can earn awards for measurable progress—such as cutting greenhouse gas emissions, improving energy efficiency, and implementing innovative community projects—ranging from Silver to Platinum and beyond.
